Fireboy and Watergirl Crystal Temple at a Glance
Fireboy and Watergirl Crystal Temple is the fourth main game in the classic co-op puzzle series by Oslo Albet. Two elemental heroes must once again work together to escape an ancient temple, but this time the big new idea is the portal. Gem-framed gateways are set into the stone walls, and stepping into one sends a hero, or even a heavy block, out of a matching gateway somewhere else in the room. The Crystal Temple keeps the classic formula and asks you to think about space in a new way.
The rules are still simple. Fireboy can walk through lava but dies in water. Watergirl can swim through water but dies in lava. Green goo is deadly to both. Each hero collects gems of their own colour, red for Fireboy and blue for Watergirl, and a level only ends when both characters stand at their own exit doors. One wrong step and the level restarts.
You can play Fireboy and Watergirl 4 for free right here on FireboyandWatergirl.net. There is nothing to download, and the Crystal Temple runs in your browser on a laptop or desktop computer.
Starting Your First Run on FireboyandWatergirl.net
Press play on the game window above. The first few levels of the Crystal Temple act as a gentle tutorial that introduces the portals one step at a time. After that, a level map opens up. You do not have to clear every stage in a strict line, because any level linked to one you have finished becomes available.
Keys for Each Hero
Watergirl moves with A and D and jumps with W. Fireboy uses the left and right arrows and jumps with the up arrow. There are no action buttons. Switches, levers and blocks all respond when you walk into them.
Sharing One Keyboard
The Crystal Temple is at its best with two people side by side, one hero each. Call out when you are about to step off a button or jump into a portal, because your partner might be standing on a platform that depends on you. Solo players can steer both heroes, which is a tougher Crystal Temple challenge.
How the Portals Bend Every Room in the Crystal Temple
Portals are what make Fireboy and Watergirl Crystal Temple feel different from the games before it. Each one sits inside a frame decorated with a coloured gem. Walk into a portal and you pop out of its partner on the other side of the room. Small lights on each frame show which gateways belong together.
Matching the Gem Frames
The basic rule in the Crystal Temple is that white portals link to white portals and black portals link to black portals, as long as the gem colours match. Some portals send you to a different place depending on which side you enter from, so test both directions. Others start switched off, and one hero may need to hold a button while the other travels through.
Sending Blocks Through
Portals carry stone blocks as well as heroes. This opens up clever solutions, such as sending a block across the room to hold down a far-away button or to fill a gap that neither hero can reach on foot. When a Crystal Temple puzzle seems impossible, look at every block on screen and ask where it could end up.
Smarter Routes and Faster Ranks
Every Crystal Temple level gives you a grade. To earn an A, both heroes must collect all of their gems and reach the exits under the target time. Missing one goal drops you to a B, and missing both gives you a C. Some levels also hide a silver diamond that either hero can pick up. Grab it before you leave, or the level will not count as complete.
Try these ideas to climb the ranks in the Crystal Temple:
- Plan first. Trace where each portal leads before anyone takes a step.
- Split the work. Send each hero after their own gems at once.
- Find shortcuts. Once you know a room, replay it using portals to skip long walks.
- Watch your landing. Check what waits beside the exit portal before you jump in.
- Practise the hard rooms until the route feels natural.
Where Fireboy and Watergirl 4 Fits in the Series
The adventure began in the Forest Temple, which you can play on our homepage. The Light Temple added beams of light and mirrors, and the Ice Temple brought slippery ice. Fireboy and Watergirl 4 took the series somewhere fresh: the Crystal Temple is built around teleporting. The Crystal Temple first appeared as a Flash game and, like the rest of the series, was later converted to HTML5 so it still runs in modern browsers.
Each temple has its own page on FireboyandWatergirl.net, so you can play the series in order. We think the Crystal Temple is one of the most brain-bending of the early games, because the portals make you think about where each hero will appear, not just where they stand now.
Common Questions About the Crystal Temple
Is Fireboy and Watergirl 4 the same game as the Crystal Temple?
Yes. Fireboy and Watergirl 4 and Fireboy and Watergirl Crystal Temple are two names for the same game. It is the fourth main entry in the series, released after the Ice Temple.
Who made Fireboy and Watergirl Crystal Temple?
The game was created by Oslo Albet, the independent developer behind the whole series. FireboyandWatergirl.net is an unofficial fan site that lets you play it in your browser.
Can I play the Crystal Temple on my own?
Yes. Control Fireboy with the arrow keys and Watergirl with W, A and D at the same time. It takes careful timing, but steering both heroes alone is a popular way to play.
Why won't a portal in the Crystal Temple take me anywhere?
Some portals are switched off when a level starts. Look for a button or lever that powers them up, and check that the gem colour matches the gateway you want to reach.
Can blocks travel through portals?
Yes. Push a block into a portal and it comes out of the matching gateway. Many Crystal Temple puzzles depend on moving blocks this way to hold buttons or fill gaps.
How do I get an A rank in the Crystal Temple?
Collect every red and blue gem and get both heroes to their doors under the target time. Replay the level and use portals as shortcuts to save seconds.
