The Forest Temple is an old stone ruin wrapped in vines, and every room is a self-contained puzzle. You pick stages from a temple map, and clearing one opens the next. Levers, Buttons and Lifts

Most puzzles in Fireboy and Watergirl revolve around switches. A lever stays where you push it, while a button only works while someone stands on it. Often one character has to hold a button so a lift rises or a gate opens for the other. Then the second character has to find a way to return the favour, because nobody gets left behind.

Boxes, Pools and Diamonds

Wooden boxes can be pushed onto buttons, used as steps or moved to fill a gap. Red diamonds can only be picked up by Fireboy, and blue diamonds only by Watergirl, so you need a route for each of them. The best diamonds are often placed right next to the wrong kind of pool, which turns a simple jump into a real test of nerve.

When you finish a level in Fireboy and Watergirl, the game shows how many diamonds you collected and gives you a grade that also reflects how fast you were. These habits will help you climb the rankings.

• Look before you move. Spend a few seconds studying the whole room and decide which character should go first.
• Talk to your partner. Say out loud who is holding a button and who is moving, so nobody walks away at the wrong moment.
• Practise short jumps. Quick taps on the jump key give you more control near the edge of a pool.
• Organise the diamonds. Agree early on which side of the level each hero will clear.
• Replay old levels. Once you know a layout, go back and chase a faster time and a better grade.
